What is a SuperGold card? - A free discounts and concessions card.
- It allows its holders access to a wide range of business discounts and facilitates easy access to government entitlements and local authority services and concessions.
- It replaces both the Community Services Card and New Zealand Super Card currently issued to New Zealand Superannuation and Veteran's Pension recipients.
Who is eligible for a SuperGold Card? The SuperGold Card is automatically issued to all eligible New Zealanders aged 65 years or over and those under this age who receive the New Zealand Superannuation or the Veterans Pension. How does SuperGold apply to public transport? SuperGold Card holders can travel for free on off-peak Metlink services. When can I use my SuperGold Card to travel free on off-peak public transport? Free off-peak travel is available to card holders from 1 October 2008. When is ‘off-peak’? - Weekday off-peak travel is between 9.00am to 3.00pm, and after 6.30pm until the end of service.

What services will be free? SuperGold Card holders can access free travel on scheduled off-peak bus, rail, harbour ferry and cable car services. Are any services excluded from the free travel eligibility? - Tours and excursions, long distance coach and train services, inter-island ferry services, special event services and Total Mobility services are excluded from the free travel eligibility.

Will I need to show any identification to travel for free? You only need to show your valid SuperGold card. Will I be asked to provide any other information? The driver or conductor may ask how far you are traveling – this is to help Greater Wellington Regional Council monitor the use of their services by SuperGold Card holders. Why is this concession being offered? Buses, trains and ferries are a critical means of getting about for many seniors, and this initiative will ensure that cost will no longer be a barrier for their travel plans. Is free travel also available for long distance travel? No. Funding applies only to public transport travel within a region. Can I use my SuperGold Card in other regions? Yes. You can use your SuperGold Card throughout the country to travel on off-peak public transport within a region. Will there be any differences in the free services offered from region to region? Yes. Does this scheme apply to Total Mobility? No. The SuperGold Card concessions apply to scheduled off-peak public transport services only. What about disabled users of public transport? While there are some SuperGold Card holders with a disability who are unable to use conventional scheduled public transport, a growing proportion of the urban bus fleet now have super-low floors which are more accessible, while train and ferry services are also increasingly accessible for people with disabilities.
