Tickets & fares

Fare evasion and lost revenue is affecting Metlink every year. Since 2023, Metlink has employed a team of Transport Officers to support Transdev Train Managers in educating passengers about fare expectations and consequences of fare evasion. A firmer approach to fare collection and enforcement will be implemented.

We want to support equality and fairness for all public transport users. Metlink’s Team in Green will work to ensure every passenger is paying the correct fare and explaining what will happen if they do not so passengers can understand the consequences of their actions.

Transport Officers complete payment checks onboard services. This will include checking Snapper, requesting ID for any concession fares, or paper tickets issued for other fare payment. If you are unable to provide evidence to support this concession, a Transport Officers will use the Warranted Authority delegation from NZ Police under the 1998 Land Transport Act to:

  • Instruct you to disembark or not to board a service and/or
  • Request you provide your personal details: full name, address, date of birth and phone number

These details maybe used to issue an infringement notice for failure to provide the correct fare payment evidence

We appreciate those passengers who pay the correct fare and increased checking will ensure everyone is paying their share.
