Johnsonville: Proposed new bus stop on Moorefield Road
This project will no longer fall under the Transport Choices programme of work, and will be reassessed again once this is possible.
The current bus stop 3081 Johnsonville - Stop B(external link) (southbound) is a temporary arrangement pending the Mall redevelopment (owned by Stride Property Ltd).
Proposed Changes
GWRC is working with Stride and Wellington City Council (WCC) to develop a fully integrated bus and rail transport hub; this is likely to take some time to work through. In the interim, a new bus stop in Johnsonville, southbound on Moorefield Road is proposed - Stop D.
The scoping of this project has been given the go-ahead as part of Transport Choices,(external link) a Waka Kotahi programme(external link) which aims to demonstrate that it's possible for communities to choose travel options that are good for all of us and our environment.
Stop D would be an operational bus stop, giving resilience and continuity of service while a more permanent location is determined. This will be critical while Stop B is closed during the mall construction.
The plan is to transition Wellingtonians to a low-emissions and a climate-resilient future for the benefit of all New Zealanders and future generations to come. To achieve this, we need improved access to public transport.
In July 2018, Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) launched a new bus network across Wellington City. As part of the changes, eight new Bus Hubs were created including Johnsonville Bus Hub.
The Johnsonville Bus Hub is located next to the Johnsonville Train Station on Moorefield Road. It provides bus connections for rail customers and bus services to customers using the central Johnsonville area. Currently, there are three bus stop locations located on Moorefield Road, one southbound and two northbound.
The current southbound bus stop (Stop B) is a temporary arrangement pending the Mall redevelopment (owned by Stride Property Ltd).
The existing location consists of 20 on-street angled carparks that are positioned on the western side of Moorefield Road, parallel to Johnsonville Train Station. These parks are supplied by WCC but are predominantly used by early morning commuters accessing the Johnsonville Train Service to Wellington. Metlink also provides 36 park and ride spaces on the eastern side of Johnsonville Station.
The proposed shelter design is a modular canopy layout, which is the same as those installed at the Johnsonville Bus Hub.
This interim bus stop will:
- Provide continuity of service when Stop B closes
- Provide efficiency (less congestion)
- Improve customer experience by providing a safe and comfortable environment to wait
- Improve customer experience by providing shelter from weather
- Ensure that accessibility, safety, and security are incorporated in the planning
- Provide an improved Bus Replacing Trains (BRT) location for Johnsonville Rail customers
Impacts
This project will provide brand new fit-for-purpose bus shelters and other amenities including accessible infrastructure and Real Time Information (RTI) signage. The space will also incorporate the proposed cycleway which is part of the wider Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) cycleway network.
To make this happen, twenty car parks would need to be removed on Moorefield Road. There will also be moderate disruption on Moorefield Road in the construction phase.
